Contrada Fantese is a group of three houses set deep in the Valle D’Itria, about a mile and a half to the historic town of Cisternino.

A small typically Southern Italian town with beautiful old white buildings the town originates from the 12 century BC when monks fleeing from the east used it as a refuge. Cisternium actually means the area where there is a monastery.

Our neighbours are local, Italian speakers who farm the area and work on old trulli. Our house is approximately 150 years old and is constructed entirely from stone.

The trulli are quadrangular constructions of stones called “chiancarelle” made of calcareous rock assembled without mortar. Nowadays, they are covered internally in mortar. The story goes that when the local lords sent around their tax collectors, the canny Italians (or Pugliese) were able to tear down the trulli quickly so that they were not taxed on property.

Villa Fantese is made up of five large trulli. There is stone flooring through out, much of it original. Villa Fantese sleeps 10 people.

Four of the bedrooms are situated on the ground floor and the fifth bedroom is on the top of the house within one of the trullo, it is accessed from outside the house.
The three bathrooms are all newly appointed and the showers have plenty of power!
